It’s as easy as following the “Metro” signs. The fastest way to reach the city center is via the Madrid metro system. Thankfully, it’s pretty straightforward, fast and easy. Just, as I said, watch each others' backs and you'll be fine. After passing through immigration and customs, the next thing for tourists in Madrid is to figure out transportation to the city center. I spend a bit of time in Barcelona as well and never have been a victim of nor a witness to any crime - but I know similar petty crimes take place. The metro doesn't YET got all the way to the airport in Barcelona but I understand it's in the planning stages. Same question for Barcelona, you say? There, you can take the train from the airport to the SANTS train station (and further) and there you can get the metro to wherever. It's a LONG walk with luggage! A taxi would probably be faster overall but MUCH more expensive too. I've got to tell you that the walk from your baggage claim in Barajas to the Barajas Airport metro station will take you about 20 minutes alone. This is upsetting and inconvenient, of course, but violent crimes almost never happen in Spain in general. And the "crime" is of the petty variety - most crimes are crimes of which you're not even aware such as something taken from your pocket or bag which you won't realized until later. Yes, it does happen but only with a very small percentage of travelers. Try not to worry too much about the crime. Better to keep a hand on them while they're sitting on the ground. Backpacks ON your back are not such a good idea. After that change you'll be with more of a local crowd - and will be more crowded as you approach the city. Remember that unless you're going VERY early or VERY late you'll be accompanies by MANY other air travelers from the airport until you change metro trains the first time in the Nuevo Ministerios station. Just watch each others' backs and you'll be fine. You won't likely have ANY problem on the Madrid metro from the airport to downtown (there's no above-ground train going from one to the other).
